LCD screen cable
A laptop LCD cable also known as video cable, display cable or screen cable. This cable transfers data signal from the motherboard and video card to the LCD screen. Also, most video cables supply high voltage DC power to the screen inverter.
On the picture you can see a typical laptop video cable. The cable has three ends with three connectors. One end plugs into the connector on the back of the LCD screen, the second end plugs into the inverter board, the third end plugs into the connector on the motherboard or video card.
The top part of the cable runs inside the laptop display panel between the LCD screen and display cover.

The bottom part of the cable could be found either under the keyboard or keyboard bezel.

In order to remove and replace the LCD cable, it will be necessary to disassemble the whole laptop.
LCD CABLE RELATED PROBLEMS
1. The image on the screen appears normal until you move the display up or down. When you move the display, the images on the entire screen starts to flicker, disappear or change collors. As soon as you stop moving the display, the image gets back to normal.
2. The LCD screen lights up but there is no image at all. The entire screen is blank. An external monitor connected to the laptop VGA port works fine, there is no problems with the external video output at all.
3. Image on the entire LCD screen is garbled. An external monitor works fine.
In many cases the video cable failures are very similar to the LCD screen failures.

Here’s something you should know. I have a new Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop and when I move the display, the image on the screen starts jumping up and down. When I stop moving the display the image as normal, no problem at all. I though I have a bad screen but when I brough my laptop to an authorized service center, they said it’s a known problem wiht Satellites M305 and it happens because of defective LCD cable. They replaced the LCD cable and now it works fine. There was nothig wrong with the screen.
I hope it helps people with Satellite M305 laptops.

Hi Mark,
Thanks that does help. I am having the same problem with my satellite M40 so I will try replacing the cable first.

Mary,
I would try reconnecting the cable first. Maybe it’s just a loose connection.
Also, that could be related to the LCD screen, not the cable.

I had a problem with the cable in my HP Pavilion laptop. Here’s how I found it.
The image on the screen was goin out when I was moving the display. I though it’s a bad screen. So I desiced to open up the display panel and check the connections. I did so and found out that the image disappers when I move the video cable, not the screen itself. First I tried reconneting the cable without any luck. Finally, I purchased a new cable and replaced it. Now the screen works as new.

I cant find one of those cables any where. I need one bad my screen is half green i know that it isnt the connection but when i get my part i will know how to fix it.

Hi I have a problem with my Compaq Presario C700 laptopn screen. The screen displays the image garbled. When I adjust the screen sometimes the image is displayed, Usually about 30 degrees. Do you think the LCD cable needs replacing or could it just be loose. Are there certain tests I can run?
My warranty’s also run out and got quoted practically the cost of the laptop to repair it. If its not a difficult job I dont mind doing it myself as I have experience with PC’s. Any help will be appreciated
Thanks

Steven,
First of all, I would suggest testing the laptop with an external monitor to make sure that external video works fine even though internal video gets garbled. If both screens, internal and external are garbled, you have a problem with the video card.
I don’t think that the cable is loose. I think it’s either bad cable or faulty LCD screen. If you have to guess, I would try replacing the cable first.
Here’s an example of taking apart a Compaq Presario F700 notebook. The guide could fit your laptop too.

THanks for your response. I’ve tried on an external screen and that works fine. I’ll try replacing the cable and get back to you. Thanks for the link

Hi just wondering are the LCD cables specif for each model. Would you recommend a cable with the exact model number. As im uk based and finding it very difficult in finding an LCD cable
June 6th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Steven,
Yes, LCD cables are laptop/screen specific. I would go with the exact replacement or at least contact the seller and make sure the new cable is compatible with your laptop and screen.

my screen was damage, how would i repair it
July 16th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
abdul,
If the screen is broken you cannot repair it. The screen has to be replaced.
July 25th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Hi everyone,
I have an Asus W5Fm (2P060C) laptop, and recently, the picture has tended to become distorted after I move the screen up or down. The garbled area covers about 4/5 of the screen area, and the area which is good is the most leftmost (This part always operates normally).
The happens more or less every time I open or close the laptop. Generally, I have been able to adjust it back and forth for maybe a minute and I find a position where the display returns. If I don’t close or adjust the lid, then the display works flawlessly (and has done so for more than a week).
I have no experience fixing laptops, but I’m guessing either the LCD cable is loose or damaged, as the problem comes with closing and opening the lid and since it operates normally once “re-adjusted”. Is this a reasonable assessment or should I consider if the LCD screen might be damaged? I thought I’d get adventurous and try to change the cable myself, but is there any way to distinguish between a broken lcd cable and just a loosely connected one?
Thanks in advance for all advice.
Best regards,
Petter
July 25th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Peter,
I think your problem is related to the LCD screen.
When you have defective cable or connection issue, it usually affect video on the entire screen.
Can you reproduce the problem without moving the display up and down?
Carefully move the left and right corners of the screen to opposite directions. Do not torque too much or you can crack the LCD. Can you distort the image doing that? If yes, most likely you have a bad screen.
July 26th, 2009 at 9:09 am
Dear Repair Man,
Thanks a bundle for your valued advice
I can’t reproduce the error by pushing the left and right corners, but since my screen has a line of dead pixels (happened approximately one and a half year ago), I do not mind changing it regardless.
Just out of curiousity: I originally attributed the problem to the cable because I envisaged some kind of mechanical event tearing at the cable when moving the lid up and down. Do you have any idea why a bad screen is affected by such movement? It works perfectly if kept in the same position, but I really do not know how these screens work and what might affect their behavior.
Anyway, thanks for putting up an awesome site. I’ve really learned a lot about laptops the last days, and there is nothing so fun as becoming adventurous with a screwdriver
Best,
Petter

Dear Repair Man,
The entire LCD screen is blank. An external monitor connected to the laptop VGA port works fine, there is no problems with the external video output at all.
So, what problem with my laptop. Please give me your value advice.
Regards,
Daniel
August 7th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Saw Daniel,
Are you sure the LCD is blank? Take a closer look. Can you see a very faint image at all? If there is no image, can you see the backight?
It tells me that most likely the video card and motherboard work properly.
If the LCD look completely dead and it doesn’t change color when you start the laptop, it’s possible that the video cable is not making good connection with the motherboard. Try reconnecting the cable.
August 8th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Is there a trick to connecting the video cable to the screen? I just replaced an lcd but it isnt working. It is lit but there is no picture. How far into the connector should the cable go? It looks like the piece of tape is what holds the connection together.
August 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Jay,
The piece of tape is only securing the connection. It should work even without the tape.
The cable connector goes all the way down into the connector on the LCD screen. There is no trick. Try reconnecting the cable again.
Can you get video on the external monitor connected to the VGA port?

I have a Acer Aspire 5100..
worked all fine until i figured out that i should clean its inside..
i took the whole laptop apart, and even unplugged the monitor.
when i took everything together again i can turn it on, i hear fans and see LED’s.. but the monitor is black, no reaction at all.. no light or anyhing.. it doesn’t work with an external monotor either
September 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Kato,
1. Make sure both memory modules are properly connected. Try reseating memory modules.
2. Did you remove the CPU while cleaning the laptop? If you did, make sure the CPU is seated correctly and the CPU socket is locked.
In order to boot the laptop with video on an external monitor you need three parts: motherboard, CPU and memory.

September 22nd, 2009 at 11:40 am
michelle,
It’s hard to tell without looking at the laptop. Could be bad LCD screen (more likley) or bad video cable (less likely).
September 29th, 2009 at 4:29 am
Hi,
Would you please list all types of data plugs available on LCD panels,
I know for instance there is a 30 pin plug and a 20 pin plug, but lately I came into a new LCD with even a smaller plug.
Thanks
October 1st, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Eddie,
There are many different plugs, it depends on the screen manufacturer and laptop model. I don’t know all of them.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:39 am
I have a dell d800 laptop and the connector on the back of the LCD for the video cable is broken off. I need to find a replacement connector. This is a 30 pin connector. Could you guide me in the right direction to find this replacement part?
October 13th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Don,
The connector is broken on the LCD? I doubt that you can find this connector.

Hi I have an Acer Aspire 5634WLMi with 2 years. Got a problem on the monitor (15.4-inch LCD CrystalBite).
It slowly started a year ago (at that time still had warranty but underestimated the problem and now it expired). In all the black images(movies, photos) began to appear some green fluorescent dots that looks like they are living (in English I think is called flickering spots, jaggies?!) which then disappear and come back. I did not care at first because both appeared to disappear. Over time there have appeared more, followed by purple dots now. These purple dots are never in black image but sometimes they are the shadow of the black image. But in videos with very dark black only come green dots (always flickering). In all the other colors there is no problem, for example I am writing this in Word and the blue and white of this image is not green. It is however in my opinion a little blurry, I do not know. The letters are black (with a slight green Halo) but it seems that they aren’t standing still and shake a little. The most strange is that on the desktop there is a pattern of green dots on the bottom left and a purple on the upper corner that are often there but sometimes also move around. In fact there was not so long ago a time when I got a perfect image. I began to think that the laptop went to very warm, open a part, cleaned the fan and reduce the processor speed by changing the temperature of the device. After a while it disappeared. But this improvement lasted only 1 day. Then it began all over again. I have also tried to connect the computer to another monitor and had a perfect image, so it seems that it is not the graphics. On the Internet I found many of these reports that the cable that goes from the graphicscard to the monitor is damaged and that a simple substitution leads to full restoration of the notebook. Anyway before attempting to open the laptop (I’ve been watching some videos of how to do) like to have another opinion from someone who realizes this. I already took him ah repair but wanted 250 euro to replace the monitor with dead pixels (which I think is wrong they are not all dead, and until very squiggly and alternate location). For 250euros rather buy a new though economically not good for me. When the computer has a completely black image is all green. For example when the screensaver comes with the ball moving from one place to another.
Do you think it’s the cable or the lcd?And how can i test it?because opening the laptop seems to be pretty difficult, can I try to do something with the monitor cable just getting the lcd of?What would you do?
Thank you very much!
October 17th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Miguel,
If the these dots appear only on the laptop screen and not on the external monitor, it could be:
1. Bad video cable.
2. LCD failure.
For some reason I think that you have a faulty video cable. Try replacing the video cable first, if it doesn’t help, could be bad LCD screen.
I published some disassembly guides for Acer Aspire 5100 (and other models) at http://www.InsideMyLaptop.com
It’s a different model but still could be similar. Read through the guide and you’ll get the idea how to take it apart. Good luck!

November 16th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Hi there Repair Guy! This really is a great site, I’ve learned a lot here. Read the whole thread and my symptoms aren’t quite the same as those listed here, but have a gut feeling it’s a bad cable, and was hoping to ask your opinion? I know you can’t say for certain without actually looking at the machine, but a best guess is all I’m looking for.
I recently repaired my left hinge, replacing them both, and have done everything I can do short of actually opening the case. This is my only home computer and it works, for now. Somehow it doesn’t seem like pulling it apart too often would be good for it and I can’t afford a new display bezel again at the moment. So, I’m hoping to not have to open it before I do so to fix it, if at all possible.
I’ve read everything I can find on symptoms of screen and cable failure respectively and tried any troubleshooting techniques I can think of. I’ll be as specific as possible:
HP dv9000 series
Symptoms do not translate through the VGA adapter to stand-alone monitor, so is not mobo/video chip.
Happens only after closing the lid and upon re-opening, every time, whether from Hibernate or Start Up.
When closing lid to Hibernate, upon re-opening the background is my wallpaper, not the Login screen.
Walking across the floor with it open makes a flash of same symptoms run across the screen
Closing the monitor partway does not make symptoms reappear, but opening it causes a jittery screen once lid reaches 90 degrees.
On start up, begins from the BIOS Post and takes about 15 minutes to clear.
Again, none of this happens when conditions are replicated on Laptop while viewing from the VGA port on separate monitor, and don’t happen unless the lid is closed
Symptoms:
Screen image squashed to the right 3/4s of the display, with horizontal streaks like scan lines, offset a few pixels from the main squashed image. No funky colors, the horizontal streaks are black and white and shift like static or snow, sometimes freezing for a second. I ran a scanner and they shifted faster.
When rebooting, the black of the screen seems to continually brighten until it’s a light grey, until the Login screen comes up.
When the image clears up, everything is normal. Lightly jiggling or torquing the screen does not make it happen.
Money is an issue here, so while I’d love to buy both a screen and a cable, I can’t afford that. Frankly I’d be happier buying just a cable, so I’m hoping that’s my problem. My gut feeling tells me it is, but I don’t have any experience with bad displays. In your experience, do you think I could get lucky and it’s just the display cable?
November 18th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Nora,
Does it mean that after a while the screen starts working properly?
Maybe the video cable is not making good connection with the motherboard. Try reseating the video cable connector on the motherboard, it’s under the keyboard cover, close to the left hinge.
November 18th, 2009 at 6:24 am
Hi Repair Guy,
Yes, once I open the lid, it will clear up after about 10 – 15 minutes. It only happens if the lid was closed.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. I was hoping it was the cable, it seemed like it might be loose, pinched or possibly deteriorating. It didn’t seem like a screen issue to me, but I’ve no experience with that.
I’ll try your suggestion and will report back. Crossing my fingers. =) Thanks so much!

I have a laptop screen from a laptop that was scrapped for parts. Is there any type of converter cable that could be used to attach the ribbon cable from the monitor to some other video signal like hooking it up to a VGA or DVI cable?
I was thinking of mounting it on the side of an XBOX 360 or PC tower.
November 26th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Bob,
I really doubt that you can use the laptop screen as an external monitor.
December 3rd, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Hello. I have an Acer Aspire 5100 and am having a strange problem with the LCD screen. Symptoms are as follows:
- Usually after the laptop has sat turned off for some time such as overnight, upon powering up the laptop the screen does not turn on. The computer boots up normally and video output comes through the external monitor connection but the LCD screen will not operate.
- Resolution seems to be to turn off the computer completely (going into and out of standby does not work) and tap lightly around the bottom of the LCD bezel and back of the laptop, as well as rapidly pressing the LCD switch (this may be superstitious habit). Sometimes shut down/tap/restart procedure needs to be repeated a few times to get the screen to engage.
- Cannot seem to get the problem to repeat once the screen has come on in one session. Only happens again after the laptop has sat turned off for some time.
- Screen has never turned off while laptop in use.
Great site, thanks in advance.
January 20th, 2010 at 2:56 pm
hmm… that would seem to be an issue related to the turning off/on itself. you mentioned the resolution is to turn computer off ‘completely’… but you said that this occurs when the laptop has sat turned off overnight. i’m gonna assume that that means it was siting in standby or hibernate.
anyhoo… it’s probably something related to the standby or hibernation settings on your computer. maybe something in the bios… perhaps a bios update is needed.

Hello,
I have a problem with my laptop, the wire hairs of my LCD CABLE came together, causing a short circuit, turn off my laptop and I bought a new LCD cable… I connect it on the motherboard but when the laptop started, the entire screen is blank. An external monitor works fine.
Do you know what can be?
Please help me!
thanks!!!
Bárbara from Concepción Chile
March 29th, 2010 at 11:08 am
Barbara,
1. Make sure the new LCD cable is connected properly. Try reconnecting the cable on the motherboard and LCD screen.
2. It’s possible that the LCD screen or motherboard was damaged when the LCD cable shorted.
March 30th, 2010 at 3:23 pm
hi
i have a c700 and the screen is completely lit up white. i bought a new lcd thinking this was the problem being that when hooked up to an external monitor it is fine. this new lcd screen still has the same problem. so i bought a new inverter and still white screen what else can it be. i am going nuts over this. thanks in advance
March 31st, 2010 at 9:11 am
Eric,
First of all, this problem is not related to the inverter board, that’s for sure. The backlight lamp lights up and that means the inverter works properly.
1. Check connection between the LCD cable and new LCD screen. Maybe the cable is not plugged correctly.
2. Try reconnecting the LCD cable on the motherboard. Maybe the connection is loose.
3. If reconnecting the cable doesn’t help and the new LCD screen is a known good one, most likely this is motherboard failure.

HP laptop laptop used to flicker when moved up and down , opened up the laptop and pinched the LCD cable and came pack on
Do I need a LCD cable then, and where is the best website to buy parts in the UK
Reply as soon as possible please, I need your heeeeelp!!
P.S Great vebsite helps a lot
April 12th, 2010 at 8:38 am
jediknight111,
It’s possible the LCD cable is not making good contact with the motherboard or LCD screen. Reconnecting the LCD cable on both ends might fix the problem.
April 12th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
Hi, I have a problem with my Acer laptop and hoping to figure out what’s wrong with it.
It turns on and screen lights up but no image is displayed. I can connect an external monitor and get an image (but still no image on the laptop itself) but I see that the startup screen with the manufacturer’s logo has lines running through it similar to the images here http://www.laptopparts101.com/graphics-card-video-board/
Would this be a video card problem or LCD problem?
Thanks in advance
April 15th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Alan,
I’m not sure if this is a video card problem because you said the external monitor works fine. Are you sure the external video works properly? Take a closer look at the external video again, maybe it has some lines or other problems?
If the external monitor works fine but there is no image on the laptop screen, it’s possible that you have a failed LCD cable or LCD screen problem. It’s hard to tell without seeing the laptop. Try reconnecting the LCD cable on both ends, on the motherboard and LCD screen.
April 22nd, 2010 at 10:12 am
Hello,
I found your website (BTW excellent read) because I have problem with my laptop screen. I dropped the laptop and broke the screen (large black area in the middle) – when on there is white light and black broken area. I connected it to the external monitor and it works fine. I just bought new screen but it doesn’t work, there is only white light. I tried to reconnect VGA cable a few times but without any change. I removed VGA cable and turn on laptop, only white light as before. I assume there is either VGA cable faulty or any chip on motherboard? If motherboard why I it works on external monitor?
Your help is very appreciated!
Thank you,
Daniel
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:51 am
Dan,
Did you see any image on the undamaged part of the screen.
The description sounds like you damaged just the screen but the laptop itself should be OK.
Looks like the laptop is not getting data signal from the motherboard.
1. Make sure the LCD cable is plugged correctly into the new screen.
2. Did you purchase a compatible screen? Maybe your new screen is not compatible with the laptop OR requires a different LCD cable? Double check the LCD screen compatibility.
3. Can you test the laptop with the old cracked screen (I assume you still can get image on the undamaged part). If you can see image on the old screen but not on the new one, the new screen is either defective or not compatible.
If the laptop works fine with the external monitor, most likely there is nothing wrong with the motherboard. I still think it’s just a bad screen.
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Hi,
thank you for your answers.
“Can you test the laptop with the old cracked screen” – I can see only white background, no picture. It is my brothers laptop and he just said that immediately after he cracked screen, he could see picture on some parts of the screen (which wasn’t cracked). However now I can’t see any picture at all, just white backlight.
So old screen and new screen behave same – white backlight only…
I heard that even external monitor works it could be still something cracked on the motherboard…is it right?
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:41 pm
Daniel,
Yes, it’s possible but not a common failure. I’ve seen failure like that a few times.
By the way, have you tried reconnecting the LCD cable on the motherboard. Maybe the cable got disconnected slightly when you dropped the laptop. Just a guess.
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:46 pm
Hi,
yes I reconnected video cable from the motherboard but without success. What is certainly strange is that my brother could see picture, but now I can’t see any…
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:48 pm
I forgot to mention that I tried to disconnect video cable from the screen = no change at all – only white backlight…
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:56 pm
Daniel,
That’s probably normal. You see just a white screen because the backlight lamp is working but there is no data signal coming from the motherboard.
On some laptops, the LCD screen turns completely white as soon as you disconnect the video cable from the screen.
I guess your brother was able to see picture right after he dropped the laptop, but after you replaced the screen there is no picture on both (new and old cracked screen. Is my assumption correct?
There is a chance that you damaged the LCD cable while disconnecting it from the cracked screen. Did you pull by the wires? I guess you can try replacing the cable next.
If you using a known good LCD screen and video cable, but the screen is still white, it’s either bad connection between the cable and motherboard/LCD or motherboard failure.

Hi I notice one more thing on different Nvidia drivers screen goes off on the battery and power cord every time i go to NVidia control panel and go to TAB ”Adjust image settings with preview” (Nvidia spinning logo in 3d) Like problem with 3d acceleration?? 2d works ok.
Right now i have default Nvidia drivers that comes with vista windows update and Logo TAB works OK and movie acceleration is OK but cant run any 3d game, its exiting to the desktop, but screen wont go blank. That isnt driver problem because before that happened i was updating Vga in every new release from Laptop2go site.

Hi there,
I had a cracked LCD screen, so I bought a new one off eBay.
During the install, I might touch something around and screen doesn’t work. External monitor works fine.
First, I thought the inverter went bad since I could see the screen for about a second when I connect and disconnect the cable to the inverter. So, I replaced the inverter but no luck.
At the time, nothing showed up on the screen, but somehow I got it to show very dim screen. It’s the same symptom as a bad inverter, very dark screeen where I can barely see things. But I know it’s there. Except, I don’t even have a second where the screen works properly even at the booting start.
Now, I found that the video cable has some broken plastic part at the end. I don’t know if it causes the problem, but my question is this.
Could the bad video cable cause the dim(very dark) screen symptom?
Or, do you think it’s some other problem such as lid position sensor? I’m using Thinkpad T61 14.1″.

Vasil,
Do you get any image on the screen at all?
Can you get image on the external monitor?
If the laptop works fine with the external monitor, but the internal screen remains lightly black all the time, check connection between the video cable and LCD screen.
It’s likely the cable got disconnected from the screen. I’ve seen it happening with Toshiba Satellite P200/P205 before.
Reconnecting the cable on the back of the screen might fix your problem.
July 22nd, 2010 at 11:53 pm
SK,
Yes, it’s possible but I don’t know if the cable is bad in your case. I cannot tell without testing.
Did you buy the same screen? You have to be very careful when buying parts on an IBM/Lenovo laptops. They don’t like “compatible” replacements.
I would suggest replacing the screen with exactly same screen. Maybe your new screen just not compatible.

Hi there.
i only need to know what the cables are used for.. any help there???
I have a problem, well actually its no problem, i was more wondering. The Screen cable, is it a standar? (my brother says so and he works IT) and if its a standard why cant i find any shcematics over the cables. I wanna plug a laptop screen to a PC, meaning converting it to vga or dvi cable.. It must be possible..
Thanx

André aka Amish,
All screen cables are different.
I don’t think it’s possible.
August 12th, 2010 at 11:33 pm
I have had some interesting reading materials on the subject: Connecting your laptop screen to your desktop.
Well its not imposible, but it cost as much or more then a new 24″ screen. It demands a converter and power supply.
So just wanted to say it so now you know.
August 18th, 2010 at 8:38 am
check lcd cable but still getting dim dark display. was working fine before took everything apart. what could be causing this issue? i havent swapped anything although im assuming something is not plugged in correctly. what can i check?
August 18th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
bluesmap,
Did you check cabled on both ends of the inverter board? Maybe one of the ends loose.
August 27th, 2010 at 9:13 am
The LCD on my D620 is nothing but horizontal and vertical lines (a nice bright plaid pattern). External monitor works fine. Bios is up to date. I’ve plugged everything in and out. Any ideas? Computer repair guy says I need a whole new top (complete LCD, cable, bezel, inverter, cover etc.,…the easy way out), but I kind of doubt it. For one thing, it’s nice and bright. I’d like to test the LCD all by itself. Is there a way to do that without taking apart my D830? Should I buy a new cable/harness thingy?
September 7th, 2010 at 7:00 am
RJB,
They quoted you the entire LCD assembly because it doesn’t cost much more than a single LCD screen and probably they had a pulled assembly in stock. Also, when you replace the whole assembly, it’s safe.
Most likely it’s either LCD screen or video cable failure. You cannot tell without testing the laptop with another known good screen or cable.
Nope. You’ll have to disassemble the laptop and remove the screen.
You have 50% chance it will fix your problem.
By the way, have you tried reseating the video cable connector on the back of the screen?
September 9th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
I dropped my laptop a year ago and 2 weeks later a green line showed up across the top of the screen. As time went on, more and more started to show up. Now, it’s shaking so bad it looks like it’s going through an earth quake with 7 lines going across the top and one red one on the bottom. It also does this blue and yellow haze flash starting from the bottom to the top of my screen if it starts to overheat. My friend told me it was either the inverter or the cable. I just replaced the inverter with what little money I had and it didn’t change a thing. My question is before I put more money into this, I want to know for sure what the solution is may it be the cable or what. Please help!!

I have an Acer 2002WLCI laptop and just getting a white screen display. External video works fine. Think the issue is with the video cable as when I press on the connector (the one connecting to the motherboard) the image sometimes comes back, but cannot find a replacement cable anywhere.
Can these be repaired, or is there any website or ressource that would have compatible cables listed anywhere? I find it hard to believe that a different video cable would be used for each laptop model. Most companies usually use the same hardware parts for different models, to make things cost-efficient, naturally.
October 5th, 2010 at 8:06 am
Sara,
First of all, this is definitely not the inverter board related failure. The LCD screen still has light, so the inverter works properly.
Most likely this is LCD screen failure but there is a slight chance of the video cable failure.
Here’s how you can narrow down the problem.
You’ll have to open up the display panel and try moving the video cable while the laptop is turned on. When you move the cable do not touch the LCD screen.
1. If moving the cable affects video on the screen and changes image somehow, probably your problem is related to the video cable. Try reconnecting the cable first and if it doesn’t help, replace the cable.
2. If moving the cable doesn’t affect image on the screen at all, probably this is LCD screen failure. In this case you’ll have to replace the screen.
October 5th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Dan,
I would try reseating the video cable connections first. Maybe it’s just loose connecting between the cable and motherboard.

Dear Repair man
HP Presario V5000. Dim to dark screen. Works with external monitor. Used to light up on reboot. Now, goes dark on a whim.
Taken me a long time and 3 inverters to find that there is a short or something w/video cable that goes into the inverter (left hand side of inverter if facing). When screen goes dark, I pull it out and re-insert and screen is bright again. Foes out- I repeat. It doesn’t seem to be in the wire, but the little white thingy bob that you insert. Do I have to replace the whole thing?? Thanks so much for any help or recommendation.

Well stil lcd of my lappie isn’t working m cmpletely freaked at it, pls advice me so that it cud b fixed. Thnx
October 11th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Joanne,
It’s likely you have a problem with the backlight lamp inside the screen. When you unplug/plug the cable, you re-apply voltage to the backlight lamp and it starts again for a while.
I think you’ll have to replace the screen. Of course, I could be wrong but to me your description sounds like the backlight lamp failure (I assume it’s not inverter problem).
October 11th, 2010 at 10:47 pm
alok ghildiyal,
Could be memory failure. I’ve seen failed memory module causing “missing system32 file” error.
I guess the memory module started failing and you were getting system 32 errors. Now it failed completely and the laptop will not boot.
Do you have two memory modules installed in the laptop? Try removing them one by one. It’s unlikely that both modules failed at the same time. When you remove the bad module the laptop might start properly.
October 11th, 2010 at 11:29 pm
thanx 4 ur prompt reply…
Failed memory module is the problem what you suggested…
Actualy there is only one RAM Of 256 MB ddr_1 is installed in it. If changing it with new one will work. Wil lcd display function after changing RAM? How about if i replace it by 1gb RAM,i hv celeron procesor wil it support.?
October 13th, 2010 at 9:15 am
alok ghildiyal,
It’s possible. I don’t know 100%.
I checked memory upgrade on Crucial site and it looks like you can install 1GB DDR2 into the slot.
Here’s memory you need:
1GB 200-pin SODIMM
* Module Size: 1GB
* Package: 200-pin SODIMM
* Feature: DDR2 PC2-5300
Will it fix your problem? I don’t know. You have to try.

I have an HP dv9700 and something is wrong with the monitor – I can see image but the entire image is somewhat blurred, covered with pinkish horizontal lines with pixels running left to right, also there is a shadow image. The image works fine on external monitor. What is the likelyhood that this is caused by the LCD cable or by the monitor itself? How can I check?

October 29th, 2010 at 7:25 am
Hello,
I have an HP Pavilion dv4 that flickered when i moved the screen. So I bought a cable from ebay installed it. While I had the laptop open i turned it on just to make sure worked, and it did. So I shut it down, took out the battery and continued to put everything together. When I turned on the laptop, all I got was a blank screen (like black.. not back lite), I plugged it into an external monitor and it working gave me the sign that video card works.
I opened up the laptop disconnected everything reconnected, powered up the laptop and the screen came up. I started reconnecting everything while power was on and the lcd screen was working. Now everything is back together, and i’m in windows… everything works. Until I restart it, I get a blank screen, no bios splash screen, it boots to windows because i can hear it and see it on the external monitor when connected.
What should I do? Please help.

I ordered a new inverter, we’ll see if that works. I’ll keep you posted.

I have an acer aspire 5734z-4836 that had a cracked screen.I replaced the screen and neither screen will come on now.The cracked screen would still come on before I took it apart.Any suggestions.Thanks.

Hi there, my Hp Pavilion Dv4 recently started to get red pixel-like dots on the screen; they tend to go to darker spots in pictures or videos. Sometimes closing the laptop a couple times makes it better for about 15 minutes, other times it makes it worse. They arent dead pixels, and I read online that it might be a damaged video cable causing the problem. If it is a cable i need to replace, can i do it on my own and where should i buy the parts?
November 30th, 2010 at 7:46 am
Hi Repair Man,
I’ve got an iMac G5 given to me with a faulty screen. I suspected that the LCD screen has given up, but I learnt from your site that it may not be.
The sympthoms:
- computer turns on, lcd lights up, but stays blank (black)
- video displays correctly on external monitor
- disconnecting one of the video inverter cables and the screen wouldn’t even switch on.
- disconnecting the video data cable while the computer is running results in a completely white lcd screen. plugging it back gives me the bla(n)ck screen.
This makes me think that the video data cable is faulty. Do you think that my fault finding logic is correct? What else could be the problem? (I tried cleaning all connectors with IPA, I suspect that perhaps some solder dried up.)
Your expertise is highly appreciated! Thank you!
December 7th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
blaisos,
I think your guess could be correct. Sounds like video cable failure.
I would try replacing it first.
If it doesn’t help, this could be LCD screen failure.
December 7th, 2010 at 2:10 pm
Quinn,
It’s hard to tell without testing the laptop.
First of all, test your laptop with an external monitor. If external image appears to be good (no red pixel-like dots), most likely it’s one of the following:
1. Loose connection between the video cable and motherboard or LCD screen. Try reconnecting the cable on both ends.
2. Could be defective video cable. You said moving the screen fixes it sometimes. It’s possible there is a pinched wire inside the cable. Try replacing the cable.
3. Finally, this could be LCD screen failure. If 1 and 2 do not help, try replacing the screen.
You’ll find laptop disassembly guides here: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/category/3-compaq-hp-laptops/
HP Pavilion dv3 or dv5 should be very similar to your Pavilion dv4.
December 7th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
john44,
Make sure all cable connected correctly.
Did you remove memory for any reason? Make sure memory seated correctly.
Also, test your laptop with an external monitor. Can you get image on the external monitor?

I have a dell inspiron 1564 which was initially showing a black screen which seemed to try and light a few times at startup but failed. I replaced the screen with a compatible replacement and now have 2 displays showing one on top of the other. This happens at post so is not windows related. It is perfect on an external monitor. Any ideas?
December 26th, 2010 at 3:50 pm
Hello Mr. Repair Man,
I have vertical lines running down my screen for my HP dv7 and from reading your descriptions of the problems, I suspect it is the video cable. Only problem is, what will I need to disassemble my laptop. Any special type of screw drivers or equipment? I’ve never disassembled anything so is there anything else I should be careful of? I really don’t want to spend any money on this. HP is charging me $400 and saying that it’s because of negligence when it’s really not. It’s a manufacturing fault and they won’t accept that. That’s why I am extremely dissapointed with HP now.
December 26th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
You should also have a forum, not just a comment area. It’d be much easier.
December 26th, 2010 at 6:10 pm
Alien,
Have you tested your laptop with an external monitor? If you see same problem on the external monitor, this is video card related problem.
If external image works fine, most likely it’s either bad LCD screen or faulty video cable. Cannot tell without testing the laptop.
By the way, I posted HP dv7 disassembly instructions here: http://www.insidemylaptop.com/remove-lcd-screen-inverter-board-hp-pavilion-dv7-notebook/
The guide explains how to take apart the display panel.

Hi, I am having Compaq 615 – LCD left connecetor, i have a cracked screen. So technician has brought a new LCD screen but right connector, along with it he brought an LCD Video cable extension, so he could make the right connector plugs reachable to Laptops left connector.
If he fits the new LCD screen, directly to my LCD video cable – its working fine. But when he attach the Extension Video cable in between(So the LCD will fit the laptop case perfectly), the screen is either being black or totally white.
Could be the problem of he extesion video cable.
let me know if – there are any other answers to look for.
thanks a lot

Hi, I am really happy to find such a site and an expert sharing his experience and helping us. When I read LCD cable related problems, I thought I found the answer of my question, but to be on the safe side I would like to check with you if LCD cable is the only reason. I have an Acer Aspire 5710, screen is turning to black or image is garbeling(generally black), while lights are still on, and notebook is still working and after a while turning back to normal. Somedays it is happening frequently, and some days it works without any problem. I plugged an external monitor for a week, no problem happened, it was working. Is it a cable problem? Thanks in advance. I attached a video for a better explaining.
January 4th, 2011 at 8:47 am
Volkan,
I think this is LCD screen failure, not the cable.
When video on the screen starts slowly fading to white or black, usually it’s the screen going bad.
January 4th, 2011 at 8:51 am
Vivek,
I’ve never seen or use a cable extension like that.
Most likely yes. You just have to install the correct screen which has connector in the same place as the original screen.
I don’t even know where he found a cable extension like that.
Just get the right screen.
January 11th, 2011 at 10:59 am
Hi.
Can you recommend somewhere I can buy an LCD cable for my Acer Aspire 7730 Laptop. I have already bought one from a website but it is faulty and I cannot get a response from the seller.
Thanks
January 13th, 2011 at 1:40 pm
ballinlea,
Parts like that not sold in local retail shops. You still have to buy it only.
You can find a new screen here, just make sure to buy it from a reputable top-rated seller. In this case you’ll be fine.

Hi , i have a Dell Latitude e6400 , had a broken screen but still can see something on it ,i replaced it for a new one , but now i cant see nothing on the screen just like a little shadow . do you think the converter got demage while replacing the screen ?, do the video card conector cable that go atached to the converter can get damage easy if it get twisted ? replacing the converter can solve the problem ? any sugestions .thanks
January 20th, 2011 at 11:45 am
I had to replace a broken lcd screen on a Dell Inspirion 1545 for a friend. All went well until I turned on the laptop for a second time to apply os updates and was met by a blank white screen. I have since replaced the inverter board but that has not rectified the problem. Do you think it could be a problem with the video cable? It work perfectly on an external monitor.
Thanks for any info you can give me.
January 22nd, 2011 at 4:31 pm
Thank you for this article. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501, and I had a feeling my LCD screen was disconnected. Instead of opening the back, I took off the panel in front of the power button, under the monitor. The LCD cable was visible through a hole, I pushed it in and voila, the screen was connected.
January 23rd, 2011 at 6:13 am
my laptop had been acting funny. i think its call an aspire by acer? i can’t tell and thats not what im worrired about.when i turn it on the acer screen is red instead of blue, when i sign in the are pixelated red swirls instead of blue. same situtation when i get to the main page. What, do you think, is going on? is something broken?
January 28th, 2011 at 4:54 pm
Rafael,
What happens if you install the original broken screen back into the laptop. Does the image come back?
If the old screen shows image but the new one doesn’t , it’s possible the new screen either defective OR not compatible with your laptop.
January 28th, 2011 at 5:11 pm
Gerry,
First of all, the problem is not related to the inverter board. You still can see the screen, so the inverter works properly.
The blank white screen means there is no data coming from the motherboard. This could be bad connection between the video cable and laptop screen. Try reconnecting the video cable connector on the back of the screen.
It’s not clear if the new screen ever shown normal video. If it didn’t, it’s possible the new screen is not compatible or defective.
If the new screen worked fine the very first time but failed after that, this could be connection related issue. As I said before, try reconnecting the cable.
January 28th, 2011 at 11:20 pm
jenessa,
First of all, you’ll have to test your laptop with an external monitor.
Turn on the laptop, wait until it’s booted to the desktop, connect the external monitor and switch video to the external monitor using keyboards shortcut.
If external video also shows bad image, most likely this is graphics card failure.
If external video works fine and the problem appears only on the laptop screen, it could be one of the following:
1. Maybe connection between the video cable and motherboard or LCD screen is loose. Reseating the cable connections might help.
2. Could be failing video cable.
3. Could be bad LCD screen.
I cannot tell what is causing the problem without testing the laptop.

Broza and sista I am getting mad of my Toshiba A300 laptop I was working till last night perfectly but after night when I turn on it gives me nothing. I test everything and noting comes out to back my laptop to function like last night. Then I tried to open the cover and so I did …. After I warm up my screen cable connector (A connector to motherboard ) it gives me light and I get it back. BUT when I move my screen little bit backward my PC suicide and turn of immediately. So could anyone wanna do some grate thing in my life ….i am give up having laptop and stop from INFO
January 30th, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Dan,
If the laptop fails like that, the first thing to try is unplug AC adapter, remove battery and wait for a some time (give it 30 minutes). After that plug the battery and AC adapter back in place and try turning it on.
If the laptop doesn’t start after that try reseating memory modules. Maybe one of the modules not making good connection with the motherboard. Try removing memory modules one by one. Test your laptop with only one module installed.

Hi,
I have a toshiba satelite L310. Sometimes its screen turns white. when i restart after closing the screen (2-3 times), it starts working normally. some times it goes black. when i press it from the hinge, all images displayes ok.
I also connected an external monitor to it but this monitor is working fine wthout any intrupt.
Is it a cable issue or is it lcd/tft issue.
How can i resolve teh same myself?
Regards
Ankur Bansal
February 21st, 2011 at 10:59 pm
Ankur Bansal,
This problem could be related to bad connection between the video cable and motherboard or LCD screen.
You can try reconnecting the video cable on both ends: on the back of the LCD screen and motherboard. This requires laptop disassembly so proceed only if you feel comfortable taking it apart.
February 24th, 2011 at 6:46 am
I have a Compaq Presario M2000 with a LP150X08 (A5)(N1) screen. The moment it is switched on there are a few extremely faint vertical lines on the screen probably about 4 inches apart, in different colours. (They remain there when the laptop fully boots up. The picture is quite visible and I am able to use it with no problem, but the lines are annoying!! Is it possible the fault could be the video cable rather thsan the screen? Obviously I do not want to replace the screen first if the problem could be the video cable. Thanks for your help/advice
February 24th, 2011 at 4:04 pm
One day out of the blue the screen on my laptop was black when I reopened the lid. I can see a faint picture in the background and sometimes if I press keys on the keyboard it will flash on quickly and go back off. Have you any ideas what might be the cause. Hope you can help. Regards

Hi again – an update to my last request for help(No:120)a few times today when Ive opened the lid on my laptop I have a picture!!! It only stays on for about 10 seconds but it’s there. Can you help please? Regards
February 25th, 2011 at 10:39 am
Sorry made a mistake with the numbering – should have said my first request was no:121
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:08 pm
Roy,
You’ll have to test your laptop with an external monitor.
If external image also has vertical lines, this is the video card failure.
If external image works properly and vertical lines appear only on the laptop screen, most likely it’s bad screen.
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:12 pm
Lin,
Most likely it’s either bad inverter board or failed backlight lamp inside the screen.
There is no way to tell which one is bad without testing the laptop without another working inverter or backlight.
Both have similar failure symptoms – no light.
If you have to guess, try replacing the inverter board first. If it doesn’t help, try replacing the LCD screen (it’s very hard to replace just the backlight lamp).
March 2nd, 2011 at 8:18 pm
Lin,
I just answered to your previous comment.
As I said, it’s either bad inverter or faulty backlight lamp. Try replacing the inverter board first.

compaq presario cq60 laptop lcd went on and off several times. then stays on 3 to 4 hours. get up in morning and has not come on since then.
May 3rd, 2011 at 4:44 pm
george,
First of all, test your laptop with an external monitor. Does the external monitor shows normal image?
Also, when the laptop screen is “off” look at the screen very closely. Can you see a very faint image on the laptop screen?
May 10th, 2011 at 1:20 pm
Tried 3 different LCD cables, 1 different inverter, and 3 different LCD monitors after buying them on ebay.
External monitor works but Laptop monitor doesn’t. Backlight shows but no image. Some monitor displays black horizontal lines, another monitor displays vertical rainbow colors but no image.
Any thoughts?

My laptop screen is not working properly. I can see the screen but most of the screen especially the right side is all messed up with patches and lines. When connected to an external monitor, everything is fine.
How do I know whether the problem with my laptop screen is cable or screen?

Hello,
I have a hp PAVILLION dv9823cl notebook pc. The LCD is not working well. The problem began a year ago, with losing the quality of picture and change of color color as if I lower the resolution really low. This happened whenever I move the display a little up or down. It got worst more and more until five months ago that it lost completely the quality. Now I can even see tiny vertical lines on areas that have a single color. With a little move of the display flickers and colors change a lot.
What can be problem and where can I buy the parts? Thank you

@jamshad – That sounds like the inverter’s dead.

Hi repair man,
I have a Sony vaio ar31s which has of a 2 days ago has lost the ability to display the color black. Anything that was black is now green!
I’ve connected to different monitors and have not been able to extend or duplicate my display on either of them.
I can however using the hdmi port onto my flat screen TV.
I don’t think its the inverter as the display works but just shows black as green. I’m more drawn towards the Lcd cable or laptop monitor.
Is the only way to test lcd cable is to replace it?
Would you concur that it is more likely the cable or the monitor?
many thanks

I have a HP DV200 series laptop. I can only see the screen work for a brief second; for example, if the computer has been asleep, I’ll wake it an it’ll show the screen really quick, then fade to black. External monitor works. I’d appreciate some help. Thanks!

Never mind; I read your page on inverters and I’m convinced that is the problem, which is a relief because it was hard finding the LCD cable replacement par number for my specific model. Thanks for your help!

hello, thankyou for the informative article and have a question regarding it
The plug that comes from my motherboard and connects to the inverter (as show on your first diagram… a 7pin female slot) on my laptop is faulty. i can eaither chop it and resolder a new connecter or rebuy a whole cable. Is there is a place where i can find either a 7 pin connector to resolder myself or a new wire .im having major trouble finding spare pieces for my acer 6935g
Yours sincerely

I have an HP Compaq CQ61-420. For the past couple of weeks, there has been intermittent problems with the screen flashing to blank white screen which required restarting to bring display back. First few days it would happen two or three times a day; now it happens about every 15 minutes or less. Would a loose cable do that (I’m not moving the computer when it happens)or does it sound like overheating? Bad LCD screen? Right now running a Hard Disk Test, and the diagnostic screen has been up and doing fine for about two hours! I created a new username to see if there might be a problem in my registry, but it didn’t make any difference. Would sure appreciate any suggestions!

@ melmac,
I don’t think this is heat related issue.
The problem could be with one of the following:
1. Bad connection between the video cable and screen or motherboard.
2. Defective video cable.
3. Failing LCD screen.
4. Even motherboard failure.
There is no way I can what is causing the problem without testing. You can try reseating the cable connections first.
Also, you can disassemble the display panel and try moving the video cable while the laptop still running. If moving the cable affects image on the screen, probably it’s bad cable.

@ jeff,
Maybe reduce the brightness, not the contrast.
I believe this laptop has a LED-backlit LCD screen which is suppose to be bright.

Hey,
I have a Toshiba Satellite p100-160 and I think the LCD cable is gone but not sure. I took off the keyboard bevel and when I press the lcd connector different ways the screen will either go black again or the backlight will come on but ive still no picture. Could it be the connection on motherboard if not the cable?
