LCD screen cable

A laptop LCD cable also known as video cable, display cable or screen cable. This cable transfers data signal from the motherboard and video card to the LCD screen. Also, most video cables supply high voltage DC power to the screen inverter.
On the picture you can see a typical laptop video cable. The cable has three ends with three connectors. One end plugs into the connector on the back of the LCD screen, the second end plugs into the inverter board, the third end plugs into the connector on the motherboard or video card.
The top part of the cable runs inside the laptop display panel between the LCD screen and display cover.

The bottom part of the cable could be found either under the keyboard or keyboard bezel.

In order to remove and replace the LCD cable, it will be necessary to disassemble the whole laptop.
LCD CABLE RELATED PROBLEMS
1. The image on the screen appears normal until you move the display up or down. When you move the display, the images on the entire screen starts to flicker, disappear or change collors. As soon as you stop moving the display, the image gets back to normal.
2. The LCD screen lights up but there is no image at all. The entire screen is blank. An external monitor connected to the laptop VGA port works fine, there is no problems with the external video output at all.
3. Image on the entire LCD screen is garbled. An external monitor works fine.
In many cases the video cable failures are very similar to the LCD screen failures.

Here’s something you should know. I have a new Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop and when I move the display, the image on the screen starts jumping up and down. When I stop moving the display the image as normal, no problem at all. I though I have a bad screen but when I brough my laptop to an authorized service center, they said it’s a known problem wiht Satellites M305 and it happens because of defective LCD cable. They replaced the LCD cable and now it works fine. There was nothig wrong with the screen.
I hope it helps people with Satellite M305 laptops.

Hi Mark,
Thanks that does help. I am having the same problem with my satellite M40 so I will try replacing the cable first.

Mary,
I would try reconnecting the cable first. Maybe it’s just a loose connection.
Also, that could be related to the LCD screen, not the cable.

I had a problem with the cable in my HP Pavilion laptop. Here’s how I found it.
The image on the screen was goin out when I was moving the display. I though it’s a bad screen. So I desiced to open up the display panel and check the connections. I did so and found out that the image disappers when I move the video cable, not the screen itself. First I tried reconneting the cable without any luck. Finally, I purchased a new cable and replaced it. Now the screen works as new.

I cant find one of those cables any where. I need one bad my screen is half green i know that it isnt the connection but when i get my part i will know how to fix it.

Hi I have a problem with my Compaq Presario C700 laptopn screen. The screen displays the image garbled. When I adjust the screen sometimes the image is displayed, Usually about 30 degrees. Do you think the LCD cable needs replacing or could it just be loose. Are there certain tests I can run?
My warranty’s also run out and got quoted practically the cost of the laptop to repair it. If its not a difficult job I dont mind doing it myself as I have experience with PC’s. Any help will be appreciated
Thanks

Steven,
First of all, I would suggest testing the laptop with an external monitor to make sure that external video works fine even though internal video gets garbled. If both screens, internal and external are garbled, you have a problem with the video card.
I don’t think that the cable is loose. I think it’s either bad cable or faulty LCD screen. If you have to guess, I would try replacing the cable first.
Here’s an example of taking apart a Compaq Presario F700 notebook. The guide could fit your laptop too.

THanks for your response. I’ve tried on an external screen and that works fine. I’ll try replacing the cable and get back to you. Thanks for the link

Hi just wondering are the LCD cables specif for each model. Would you recommend a cable with the exact model number. As im uk based and finding it very difficult in finding an LCD cable
June 6th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Steven,
Yes, LCD cables are laptop/screen specific. I would go with the exact replacement or at least contact the seller and make sure the new cable is compatible with your laptop and screen.

my screen was damage, how would i repair it
July 16th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
abdul,
If the screen is broken you cannot repair it. The screen has to be replaced.
July 25th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Hi everyone,
I have an Asus W5Fm (2P060C) laptop, and recently, the picture has tended to become distorted after I move the screen up or down. The garbled area covers about 4/5 of the screen area, and the area which is good is the most leftmost (This part always operates normally).
The happens more or less every time I open or close the laptop. Generally, I have been able to adjust it back and forth for maybe a minute and I find a position where the display returns. If I don’t close or adjust the lid, then the display works flawlessly (and has done so for more than a week).
I have no experience fixing laptops, but I’m guessing either the LCD cable is loose or damaged, as the problem comes with closing and opening the lid and since it operates normally once “re-adjusted”. Is this a reasonable assessment or should I consider if the LCD screen might be damaged? I thought I’d get adventurous and try to change the cable myself, but is there any way to distinguish between a broken lcd cable and just a loosely connected one?
Thanks in advance for all advice.
Best regards,
Petter
July 25th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Peter,
I think your problem is related to the LCD screen.
When you have defective cable or connection issue, it usually affect video on the entire screen.
Can you reproduce the problem without moving the display up and down?
Carefully move the left and right corners of the screen to opposite directions. Do not torque too much or you can crack the LCD. Can you distort the image doing that? If yes, most likely you have a bad screen.
July 26th, 2009 at 9:09 am
Dear Repair Man,
Thanks a bundle for your valued advice
I can’t reproduce the error by pushing the left and right corners, but since my screen has a line of dead pixels (happened approximately one and a half year ago), I do not mind changing it regardless.
Just out of curiousity: I originally attributed the problem to the cable because I envisaged some kind of mechanical event tearing at the cable when moving the lid up and down. Do you have any idea why a bad screen is affected by such movement? It works perfectly if kept in the same position, but I really do not know how these screens work and what might affect their behavior.
Anyway, thanks for putting up an awesome site. I’ve really learned a lot about laptops the last days, and there is nothing so fun as becoming adventurous with a screwdriver
Best,
Petter

Dear Repair Man,
The entire LCD screen is blank. An external monitor connected to the laptop VGA port works fine, there is no problems with the external video output at all.
So, what problem with my laptop. Please give me your value advice.
Regards,
Daniel
August 7th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Saw Daniel,
Are you sure the LCD is blank? Take a closer look. Can you see a very faint image at all? If there is no image, can you see the backight?
It tells me that most likely the video card and motherboard work properly.
If the LCD look completely dead and it doesn’t change color when you start the laptop, it’s possible that the video cable is not making good connection with the motherboard. Try reconnecting the cable.
August 8th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
Is there a trick to connecting the video cable to the screen? I just replaced an lcd but it isnt working. It is lit but there is no picture. How far into the connector should the cable go? It looks like the piece of tape is what holds the connection together.
August 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Jay,
The piece of tape is only securing the connection. It should work even without the tape.
The cable connector goes all the way down into the connector on the LCD screen. There is no trick. Try reconnecting the cable again.
Can you get video on the external monitor connected to the VGA port?

I have a Acer Aspire 5100..
worked all fine until i figured out that i should clean its inside..
i took the whole laptop apart, and even unplugged the monitor.
when i took everything together again i can turn it on, i hear fans and see LED’s.. but the monitor is black, no reaction at all.. no light or anyhing.. it doesn’t work with an external monotor either
September 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Kato,
1. Make sure both memory modules are properly connected. Try reseating memory modules.
2. Did you remove the CPU while cleaning the laptop? If you did, make sure the CPU is seated correctly and the CPU socket is locked.
In order to boot the laptop with video on an external monitor you need three parts: motherboard, CPU and memory.

September 22nd, 2009 at 11:40 am
michelle,
It’s hard to tell without looking at the laptop. Could be bad LCD screen (more likley) or bad video cable (less likely).
September 29th, 2009 at 4:29 am
Hi,
Would you please list all types of data plugs available on LCD panels,
I know for instance there is a 30 pin plug and a 20 pin plug, but lately I came into a new LCD with even a smaller plug.
Thanks
October 1st, 2009 at 12:42 pm
Eddie,
There are many different plugs, it depends on the screen manufacturer and laptop model. I don’t know all of them.
October 13th, 2009 at 4:39 am
I have a dell d800 laptop and the connector on the back of the LCD for the video cable is broken off. I need to find a replacement connector. This is a 30 pin connector. Could you guide me in the right direction to find this replacement part?
October 13th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Don,
The connector is broken on the LCD? I doubt that you can find this connector.

Hi I have an Acer Aspire 5634WLMi with 2 years. Got a problem on the monitor (15.4-inch LCD CrystalBite).
It slowly started a year ago (at that time still had warranty but underestimated the problem and now it expired). In all the black images(movies, photos) began to appear some green fluorescent dots that looks like they are living (in English I think is called flickering spots, jaggies?!) which then disappear and come back. I did not care at first because both appeared to disappear. Over time there have appeared more, followed by purple dots now. These purple dots are never in black image but sometimes they are the shadow of the black image. But in videos with very dark black only come green dots (always flickering). In all the other colors there is no problem, for example I am writing this in Word and the blue and white of this image is not green. It is however in my opinion a little blurry, I do not know. The letters are black (with a slight green Halo) but it seems that they aren’t standing still and shake a little. The most strange is that on the desktop there is a pattern of green dots on the bottom left and a purple on the upper corner that are often there but sometimes also move around. In fact there was not so long ago a time when I got a perfect image. I began to think that the laptop went to very warm, open a part, cleaned the fan and reduce the processor speed by changing the temperature of the device. After a while it disappeared. But this improvement lasted only 1 day. Then it began all over again. I have also tried to connect the computer to another monitor and had a perfect image, so it seems that it is not the graphics. On the Internet I found many of these reports that the cable that goes from the graphicscard to the monitor is damaged and that a simple substitution leads to full restoration of the notebook. Anyway before attempting to open the laptop (I’ve been watching some videos of how to do) like to have another opinion from someone who realizes this. I already took him ah repair but wanted 250 euro to replace the monitor with dead pixels (which I think is wrong they are not all dead, and until very squiggly and alternate location). For 250euros rather buy a new though economically not good for me. When the computer has a completely black image is all green. For example when the screensaver comes with the ball moving from one place to another.
Do you think it’s the cable or the lcd?And how can i test it?because opening the laptop seems to be pretty difficult, can I try to do something with the monitor cable just getting the lcd of?What would you do?
Thank you very much!
October 17th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Miguel,
If the these dots appear only on the laptop screen and not on the external monitor, it could be:
1. Bad video cable.
2. LCD failure.
For some reason I think that you have a faulty video cable. Try replacing the video cable first, if it doesn’t help, could be bad LCD screen.
I published some disassembly guides for Acer Aspire 5100 (and other models) at http://www.InsideMyLaptop.com
It’s a different model but still could be similar. Read through the guide and you’ll get the idea how to take it apart. Good luck!

November 16th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Hi there Repair Guy! This really is a great site, I’ve learned a lot here. Read the whole thread and my symptoms aren’t quite the same as those listed here, but have a gut feeling it’s a bad cable, and was hoping to ask your opinion? I know you can’t say for certain without actually looking at the machine, but a best guess is all I’m looking for.
I recently repaired my left hinge, replacing them both, and have done everything I can do short of actually opening the case. This is my only home computer and it works, for now. Somehow it doesn’t seem like pulling it apart too often would be good for it and I can’t afford a new display bezel again at the moment. So, I’m hoping to not have to open it before I do so to fix it, if at all possible.
I’ve read everything I can find on symptoms of screen and cable failure respectively and tried any troubleshooting techniques I can think of. I’ll be as specific as possible:
HP dv9000 series
Symptoms do not translate through the VGA adapter to stand-alone monitor, so is not mobo/video chip.
Happens only after closing the lid and upon re-opening, every time, whether from Hibernate or Start Up.
When closing lid to Hibernate, upon re-opening the background is my wallpaper, not the Login screen.
Walking across the floor with it open makes a flash of same symptoms run across the screen
Closing the monitor partway does not make symptoms reappear, but opening it causes a jittery screen once lid reaches 90 degrees.
On start up, begins from the BIOS Post and takes about 15 minutes to clear.
Again, none of this happens when conditions are replicated on Laptop while viewing from the VGA port on separate monitor, and don’t happen unless the lid is closed
Symptoms:
Screen image squashed to the right 3/4s of the display, with horizontal streaks like scan lines, offset a few pixels from the main squashed image. No funky colors, the horizontal streaks are black and white and shift like static or snow, sometimes freezing for a second. I ran a scanner and they shifted faster.
When rebooting, the black of the screen seems to continually brighten until it’s a light grey, until the Login screen comes up.
When the image clears up, everything is normal. Lightly jiggling or torquing the screen does not make it happen.
Money is an issue here, so while I’d love to buy both a screen and a cable, I can’t afford that. Frankly I’d be happier buying just a cable, so I’m hoping that’s my problem. My gut feeling tells me it is, but I don’t have any experience with bad displays. In your experience, do you think I could get lucky and it’s just the display cable?
November 18th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Nora,
Does it mean that after a while the screen starts working properly?
Maybe the video cable is not making good connection with the motherboard. Try reseating the video cable connector on the motherboard, it’s under the keyboard cover, close to the left hinge.
November 18th, 2009 at 6:24 am
Hi Repair Guy,
Yes, once I open the lid, it will clear up after about 10 – 15 minutes. It only happens if the lid was closed.
Thanks so much for your thoughts. I was hoping it was the cable, it seemed like it might be loose, pinched or possibly deteriorating. It didn’t seem like a screen issue to me, but I’ve no experience with that.
I’ll try your suggestion and will report back. Crossing my fingers. =) Thanks so much!

I have a laptop screen from a laptop that was scrapped for parts. Is there any type of converter cable that could be used to attach the ribbon cable from the monitor to some other video signal like hooking it up to a VGA or DVI cable?
I was thinking of mounting it on the side of an XBOX 360 or PC tower.
November 26th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Bob,
I really doubt that you can use the laptop screen as an external monitor.
December 3rd, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Hello. I have an Acer Aspire 5100 and am having a strange problem with the LCD screen. Symptoms are as follows:
- Usually after the laptop has sat turned off for some time such as overnight, upon powering up the laptop the screen does not turn on. The computer boots up normally and video output comes through the external monitor connection but the LCD screen will not operate.
- Resolution seems to be to turn off the computer completely (going into and out of standby does not work) and tap lightly around the bottom of the LCD bezel and back of the laptop, as well as rapidly pressing the LCD switch (this may be superstitious habit). Sometimes shut down/tap/restart procedure needs to be repeated a few times to get the screen to engage.
- Cannot seem to get the problem to repeat once the screen has come on in one session. Only happens again after the laptop has sat turned off for some time.
- Screen has never turned off while laptop in use.
Great site, thanks in advance.
January 20th, 2010 at 2:56 pm
hmm… that would seem to be an issue related to the turning off/on itself. you mentioned the resolution is to turn computer off ‘completely’… but you said that this occurs when the laptop has sat turned off overnight. i’m gonna assume that that means it was siting in standby or hibernate.
anyhoo… it’s probably something related to the standby or hibernation settings on your computer. maybe something in the bios… perhaps a bios update is needed.

Hello,
I have a problem with my laptop, the wire hairs of my LCD CABLE came together, causing a short circuit, turn off my laptop and I bought a new LCD cable… I connect it on the motherboard but when the laptop started, the entire screen is blank. An external monitor works fine.
Do you know what can be?
Please help me!
thanks!!!
Bárbara from Concepción Chile
March 29th, 2010 at 11:08 am
Barbara,
1. Make sure the new LCD cable is connected properly. Try reconnecting the cable on the motherboard and LCD screen.
2. It’s possible that the LCD screen or motherboard was damaged when the LCD cable shorted.
March 30th, 2010 at 3:23 pm
hi
i have a c700 and the screen is completely lit up white. i bought a new lcd thinking this was the problem being that when hooked up to an external monitor it is fine. this new lcd screen still has the same problem. so i bought a new inverter and still white screen what else can it be. i am going nuts over this. thanks in advance
March 31st, 2010 at 9:11 am
Eric,
First of all, this problem is not related to the inverter board, that’s for sure. The backlight lamp lights up and that means the inverter works properly.
1. Check connection between the LCD cable and new LCD screen. Maybe the cable is not plugged correctly.
2. Try reconnecting the LCD cable on the motherboard. Maybe the connection is loose.
3. If reconnecting the cable doesn’t help and the new LCD screen is a known good one, most likely this is motherboard failure.

HP laptop laptop used to flicker when moved up and down , opened up the laptop and pinched the LCD cable and came pack on
Do I need a LCD cable then, and where is the best website to buy parts in the UK
Reply as soon as possible please, I need your heeeeelp!!
P.S Great vebsite helps a lot
April 12th, 2010 at 8:38 am
jediknight111,
It’s possible the LCD cable is not making good contact with the motherboard or LCD screen. Reconnecting the LCD cable on both ends might fix the problem.
April 12th, 2010 at 7:02 pm
Hi, I have a problem with my Acer laptop and hoping to figure out what’s wrong with it.
It turns on and screen lights up but no image is displayed. I can connect an external monitor and get an image (but still no image on the laptop itself) but I see that the startup screen with the manufacturer’s logo has lines running through it similar to the images here http://www.laptopparts101.com/graphics-card-video-board/
Would this be a video card problem or LCD problem?
Thanks in advance
April 15th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Alan,
I’m not sure if this is a video card problem because you said the external monitor works fine. Are you sure the external video works properly? Take a closer look at the external video again, maybe it has some lines or other problems?
If the external monitor works fine but there is no image on the laptop screen, it’s possible that you have a failed LCD cable or LCD screen problem. It’s hard to tell without seeing the laptop. Try reconnecting the LCD cable on both ends, on the motherboard and LCD screen.
April 22nd, 2010 at 10:12 am
Hello,
I found your website (BTW excellent read) because I have problem with my laptop screen. I dropped the laptop and broke the screen (large black area in the middle) – when on there is white light and black broken area. I connected it to the external monitor and it works fine. I just bought new screen but it doesn’t work, there is only white light. I tried to reconnect VGA cable a few times but without any change. I removed VGA cable and turn on laptop, only white light as before. I assume there is either VGA cable faulty or any chip on motherboard? If motherboard why I it works on external monitor?
Your help is very appreciated!
Thank you,
Daniel
April 23rd, 2010 at 7:51 am
Dan,
Did you see any image on the undamaged part of the screen.
The description sounds like you damaged just the screen but the laptop itself should be OK.
Looks like the laptop is not getting data signal from the motherboard.
1. Make sure the LCD cable is plugged correctly into the new screen.
2. Did you purchase a compatible screen? Maybe your new screen is not compatible with the laptop OR requires a different LCD cable? Double check the LCD screen compatibility.
3. Can you test the laptop with the old cracked screen (I assume you still can get image on the undamaged part). If you can see image on the old screen but not on the new one, the new screen is either defective or not compatible.
If the laptop works fine with the external monitor, most likely there is nothing wrong with the motherboard. I still think it’s just a bad screen.
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Hi,
thank you for your answers.
“Can you test the laptop with the old cracked screen” – I can see only white background, no picture. It is my brothers laptop and he just said that immediately after he cracked screen, he could see picture on some parts of the screen (which wasn’t cracked). However now I can’t see any picture at all, just white backlight.
So old screen and new screen behave same – white backlight only…
I heard that even external monitor works it could be still something cracked on the motherboard…is it right?
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:41 pm
Daniel,
Yes, it’s possible but not a common failure. I’ve seen failure like that a few times.
By the way, have you tried reconnecting the LCD cable on the motherboard. Maybe the cable got disconnected slightly when you dropped the laptop. Just a guess.
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:46 pm
Hi,
yes I reconnected video cable from the motherboard but without success. What is certainly strange is that my brother could see picture, but now I can’t see any…
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:48 pm
I forgot to mention that I tried to disconnect video cable from the screen = no change at all – only white backlight…
April 23rd, 2010 at 12:56 pm
Daniel,
That’s probably normal. You see just a white screen because the backlight lamp is working but there is no data signal coming from the motherboard.
On some laptops, the LCD screen turns completely white as soon as you disconnect the video cable from the screen.
I guess your brother was able to see picture right after he dropped the laptop, but after you replaced the screen there is no picture on both (new and old cracked screen. Is my assumption correct?
There is a chance that you damaged the LCD cable while disconnecting it from the cracked screen. Did you pull by the wires? I guess you can try replacing the cable next.
If you using a known good LCD screen and video cable, but the screen is still white, it’s either bad connection between the cable and motherboard/LCD or motherboard failure.

Hi I notice one more thing on different Nvidia drivers screen goes off on the battery and power cord every time i go to NVidia control panel and go to TAB ”Adjust image settings with preview” (Nvidia spinning logo in 3d) Like problem with 3d acceleration?? 2d works ok.
Right now i have default Nvidia drivers that comes with vista windows update and Logo TAB works OK and movie acceleration is OK but cant run any 3d game, its exiting to the desktop, but screen wont go blank. That isnt driver problem because before that happened i was updating Vga in every new release from Laptop2go site.

Hi there,
I had a cracked LCD screen, so I bought a new one off eBay.
During the install, I might touch something around and screen doesn’t work. External monitor works fine.
First, I thought the inverter went bad since I could see the screen for about a second when I connect and disconnect the cable to the inverter. So, I replaced the inverter but no luck.
At the time, nothing showed up on the screen, but somehow I got it to show very dim screen. It’s the same symptom as a bad inverter, very dark screeen where I can barely see things. But I know it’s there. Except, I don’t even have a second where the screen works properly even at the booting start.
Now, I found that the video cable has some broken plastic part at the end. I don’t know if it causes the problem, but my question is this.
Could the bad video cable cause the dim(very dark) screen symptom?
Or, do you think it’s some other problem such as lid position sensor? I’m using Thinkpad T61 14.1″.

Vasil,
Do you get any image on the screen at all?
Can you get image on the external monitor?
If the laptop works fine with the external monitor, but the internal screen remains lightly black all the time, check connection between the video cable and LCD screen.
It’s likely the cable got disconnected from the screen. I’ve seen it happening with Toshiba Satellite P200/P205 before.
Reconnecting the cable on the back of the screen might fix your problem.

SK,
Yes, it’s possible but I don’t know if the cable is bad in your case. I cannot tell without testing.
Did you buy the same screen? You have to be very careful when buying parts on an IBM/Lenovo laptops. They don’t like “compatible” replacements.
I would suggest replacing the screen with exactly same screen. Maybe your new screen just not compatible.
