LCD screen cable
A laptop LCD cable also known as video cable, display cable or screen cable. This cable transfers data signal from the motherboard and video card to the LCD screen. Also, most video cables supply high voltage DC power to the screen inverter.
On the picture you can see a typical laptop video cable. The cable has three ends with three connectors. One end plugs into the connector on the back of the LCD screen, the second end plugs into the inverter board, the third end plugs into the connector on the motherboard or video card.
The top part of the cable runs inside the laptop display panel between the LCD screen and display cover.

The bottom part of the cable could be found either under the keyboard or keyboard bezel.

In order to remove and replace the LCD cable, it will be necessary to disassemble the whole laptop.
LCD CABLE RELATED PROBLEMS
1. The image on the screen appears normal until you move the display up or down. When you move the display, the images on the entire screen starts to flicker, disappear or change collors. As soon as you stop moving the display, the image gets back to normal.
2. The LCD screen lights up but there is no image at all. The entire screen is blank. An external monitor connected to the laptop VGA port works fine, there is no problems with the external video output at all.
3. Image on the entire LCD screen is garbled. An external monitor works fine.
In many cases the video cable failures are very similar to the LCD screen failures.

Hi, my son dropped my laptop and the screen is now bright pink, other colours swirling around on the desktop mainly greens and pinks. it works fine apart from the colour problem, i am using it now. could it be that the video cable has come loose or do you think it is something more serious. dont want to start taking apart if it needs to go to someone with more experience. thankyou regards joanne

Hey,
I have a Toshiba Satellite p100-160 and I think the LCD cable is gone but not sure. I took off the keyboard bevel and when I press the lcd connector different ways the screen will either go black again or the backlight will come on but ive still no picture. Could it be the connection on motherboard if not the cable?

@ jeff,
Maybe reduce the brightness, not the contrast.
I believe this laptop has a LED-backlit LCD screen which is suppose to be bright.

@ melmac,
I don’t think this is heat related issue.
The problem could be with one of the following:
1. Bad connection between the video cable and screen or motherboard.
2. Defective video cable.
3. Failing LCD screen.
4. Even motherboard failure.
There is no way I can what is causing the problem without testing. You can try reseating the cable connections first.
Also, you can disassemble the display panel and try moving the video cable while the laptop still running. If moving the cable affects image on the screen, probably it’s bad cable.

I have an HP Compaq CQ61-420. For the past couple of weeks, there has been intermittent problems with the screen flashing to blank white screen which required restarting to bring display back. First few days it would happen two or three times a day; now it happens about every 15 minutes or less. Would a loose cable do that (I’m not moving the computer when it happens)or does it sound like overheating? Bad LCD screen? Right now running a Hard Disk Test, and the diagnostic screen has been up and doing fine for about two hours! I created a new username to see if there might be a problem in my registry, but it didn’t make any difference. Would sure appreciate any suggestions!

hello, thankyou for the informative article and have a question regarding it
The plug that comes from my motherboard and connects to the inverter (as show on your first diagram… a 7pin female slot) on my laptop is faulty. i can eaither chop it and resolder a new connecter or rebuy a whole cable. Is there is a place where i can find either a 7 pin connector to resolder myself or a new wire .im having major trouble finding spare pieces for my acer 6935g
Yours sincerely

Never mind; I read your page on inverters and I’m convinced that is the problem, which is a relief because it was hard finding the LCD cable replacement par number for my specific model. Thanks for your help!

I have a HP DV200 series laptop. I can only see the screen work for a brief second; for example, if the computer has been asleep, I’ll wake it an it’ll show the screen really quick, then fade to black. External monitor works. I’d appreciate some help. Thanks!

Hi repair man,
I have a Sony vaio ar31s which has of a 2 days ago has lost the ability to display the color black. Anything that was black is now green!
I’ve connected to different monitors and have not been able to extend or duplicate my display on either of them.
I can however using the hdmi port onto my flat screen TV.
I don’t think its the inverter as the display works but just shows black as green. I’m more drawn towards the Lcd cable or laptop monitor.
Is the only way to test lcd cable is to replace it?
Would you concur that it is more likely the cable or the monitor?
many thanks
