Could the bad video cable cause the dim(very dark) screen symptom?

Yes, it’s possible but I don’t know if the cable is bad in your case. I cannot tell without testing.

At the time, nothing showed up on the screen, but somehow I got it to show very dim screen. It’s the same symptom as a bad inverter, very dark screeen where I can barely see things. But I know it’s there. Except, I don’t even have a second where the screen works properly even at the booting start.

Did you buy the same screen? You have to be very careful when buying parts on an IBM/Lenovo laptops. They don’t like “compatible” replacements.
I would suggest replacing the screen with exactly same screen. Maybe your new screen just not compatible.

Do you get any image on the screen at all?
Can you get image on the external monitor?
If the laptop works fine with the external monitor, but the internal screen remains lightly black all the time, check connection between the video cable and LCD screen.
It’s likely the cable got disconnected from the screen. I’ve seen it happening with Toshiba Satellite P200/P205 before.
Reconnecting the cable on the back of the screen might fix your problem.

I had a cracked LCD screen, so I bought a new one off eBay.
During the install, I might touch something around and screen doesn’t work. External monitor works fine.

First, I thought the inverter went bad since I could see the screen for about a second when I connect and disconnect the cable to the inverter. So, I replaced the inverter but no luck.

Or, do you think it’s some other problem such as lid position sensor? I’m using Thinkpad T61 14.1″.

I forgot to mention that I tried to disconnect video cable from the screen = no change at all – only white backlight…

That’s probably normal. You see just a white screen because the backlight lamp is working but there is no data signal coming from the motherboard.
On some laptops, the LCD screen turns completely white as soon as you disconnect the video cable from the screen.

What is certainly strange is that my brother could see picture, but now I can’t see any…

I guess your brother was able to see picture right after he dropped the laptop, but after you replaced the screen there is no picture on both (new and old cracked screen. Is my assumption correct?

There is a chance that you damaged the LCD cable while disconnecting it from the cracked screen. Did you pull by the wires? I guess you can try replacing the cable next.
If you using a known good LCD screen and video cable, but the screen is still white, it’s either bad connection between the cable and motherboard/LCD or motherboard failure.
