Repair Man
Thanks for your reply. My initial problem was that at first Outlook Express and then Internet Explorer could not be opened. The guy who restored the connection for me also took the opportunity to replace the wireless card{I think that is what it is called]which apparently was no longer working. He said{or I understood him to say}that I would find it more convenient if I got myself a wireless router so that the laptop could be moved around.
I said I thought it was not good practice to keep the battery at full charge because I undestood that it should be allowed to discharge itself from time to time to maintain it in good condition[as is recommended for the batteries in my cordless telephone}
My problem is still that the laptop cannot be operated from the mains supply alone and that if the battery fails I shall have to buy a new one in order to get the laptop started.
Thanks

@ johnjo,

After a repair my Amilo M1405 laptop which had only ever been previously used plugged into the mains supply will now work only on battery power and shuts down after couple of hours or so of use after the battery has discharged itself.

What was repaired?

My temporary solution is to keep the battery charger permanently plugged in so that the battery is always at 100% capacity but I am not sure if this is good practice.

Why do you think it's a bad practice. I think a laptop suppose to work like that.
I never remove the battery while the laptop is plugged into the mains. My battery always says "Fully charged (100%)".

@ Ed Hand,

I have a Dell Latitude C840. The locking tab that holds the battery in has broken. I have been told I need to find a damaged unit so I can use the parts. Any suggestions would appreciated.

The locking tab is part of the bottom cover. Yes, you can use latches from another cover but it will be necessary to disassemble the entire laptop.
I saw this bottom cover on eBay for about $10+shipping.

@ juan paulo,

i have a hp g62 every time i turn it on the battery life left is only 94% but before i shut it down befor going to sleep it its fully charged because i use the ac adapter, does the laptop consume the battery even it is off?

Yes, the laptop might consume some battery while being off but not that much. Losing 6% overnight is probably too much. Maybe your battery has to be replaced but I cannot tell for sure without testing the laptop with another battery.
Do you actually turn off the laptop? If the laptop in sleep mode, this could be normal.

@ Beth,

I have a Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980. The locking tabs that hold the battery in place are broken. Is it possible to repair or have them repaired / replaced? I can’t find any info with Toshiba.

Most likely these tabs are part of the laptop bottom cover.
If tabs are broken, you'll have to replace the laptop base cover.
In some cases it's possible to remove tabs from a new bottom cover and install on the original cover.
Complete laptop disassembly required.

Dave T,

Now…all I need to do is figure out how to tighten the hinges. I have about 2 inches of play on the LCD screen….anyone offer suggestions on how to fix???

Take a look at this disassembly guide for a Satellite P30 laptop: http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaP30/SatelliteP30_disassemble_laptop_1.htm
Maybe you should try tightening two hinge screws shown on the step 10.
